Work assignments
The position is located at the Division of Chemistry at the Department of Physics, Biology and Chemistry (IFM). The Division of Chemistry is engaged in research, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate education in the fields of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biotechnology. Research in organic chemistry is often conducted in collaboration with other disciplines within the chemistry department and other areas within IFM. Expertise in organic chemistry is crucial not only for research within the field but also valuable for the university's research in related disciplines such as pharmacology, biomedicine, protein science, forensic chemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, surface physics, and organic electronics. Collaborative projects are also performed in cooperation with external partners.

As an Associate Professor in organic chemistry your duties include teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as supervising students. This involves course design and course responsibility. Courses in organic chemistry are offered within various educational programs and in postgraduate education. The primary teaching focus will be on organic chemistry, but teaching in other chemistry courses may also occur. In addition to lectures and lessons, responsibilities include supervising exam thesis work and overseeing laboratory courses and specialized instrumentation.

You conduct internationally competitive and independent research in organic chemistry, preferably in synthetic organic chemistry or related physical-organic chemistry, and you are willing to accept a general responsibility for this field of research. You develop laboratory and research activities in organic chemistry and successfully seek external funding. You supervise doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. You like to work together with other disciplines within the chemistry department, IFM, and the university, and you participate in national and international research collaborations.

You are active in the research community, participate in activities of the division such as seminars and workshops, engage in research projects, communicate results through academic publications, and help attract external research funding.

You actively contribute to the university's development work. Collaboration is an integral part of the university's research and education mission. Collaboration in education involves planning, organizing, and implementing effective cooperation. Collaboration in research involves disseminating, making accessible, and utilizing research.

The position may also include administrative duties, such as serving on committees, working groups, and boards. We appreciate your participation in and interest in leadership roles.

Your work includes monitoring developments nationally and internationally within your field of study and other societal developments that are important to your work.

You are flexible and have the ability to navigate different types of educational and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the working group’s professional development, collegial ways of working and social cohesion. The fact that you are present and active is something we see as self-evident in order to ensure that you are able to perform your duties in an optimal way and enjoy your working community.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence, with demonstrated teaching skills, or other professional skills relevant to the subject matter and duties of the position.

For this position, special emphasis will be placed, first, on academic expertise; second, on pedagogical expertise; and third, on other skills that are considered equally valuable.

In terms of pedagogical expertise, the following will be assessed:
  • A requirement for the position is experience in teaching organic chemistry.
  • Of particular merit for the position is experience of chief responsibility for courses in the field of organic chemistry.
  • Of merit for the position is completed university pedagogical training.
In terms of academic expertise, the following will be assessed:
  • Requirements for the position are a doctoral degree in organic chemistry, a completed postdoctoral position, active internationally competitive research projects in organic chemistry resulting in publications in internationally recognized journals, and documented skills in attracting external funding for the current research projects. A strong drive towards performing high-quality research is a requirement.
  • Of particular merit for the position is a prior or current assistant professor position in organic chemistry, as well as research activities involving organic multistep synthesis.
  • Of merit for the position is a docent exam. It is also meritorious to have served as the main supervisor for doctoral students that have completed their doctoral degree.
Meritorious for the position are documented skills in collaboration within education and research.

As teaching and research is conducted in both Swedish and English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in English, and it is desirable that you are able teach in Swedish within two years.
